“Investigation into material qualities, processes and techniques; and iterative design through generative modelling and drawing. It sets out a six stage methodology which requires you to simultaneously be reflective and reflexive in design. An initial design for a single spatial cell must continually reflex as youreflect on its own performance as well as external factors introduced at each stage.”
A Space of Appearance builds on the understanding of
architectural plurality, specifically its correlation with the social field of the city.
The concept of the design is based on the importance of the public realm. People gather to see and hear, as much as to be seen and to be heard.
“Men used to enter the public realm because they wanted something of their own or something they had in common with others to be more permanent than their earthly lives.” Hannah Arendt
route (n.) – a way or course taken in getting from a starting
point to a destination
starting point – Wuhan residents
destination – low-cost collective housing, community job opportunities
The townscape of Wuhan is constantly changing, adjusting to the
Chinese fast pace of life and people’s living standards nowadays. what used to be needed is no
longer required. The towers are rising as a sufficient dense housing, creating adequate living
spaces for their residents, without any sense of community.
The old part of Hankou is one of the areas that have suffered from a current urban development. an abandoned space and empty units lead to increasing poverty. its enclosure creates a separation from the city, which results in neglecting the site by developers and government.
The aim is to create a route back to the area “Sandeli”. the starting point of the route will be Wuhan residents and a destination a low-cost collective housing, bringing a sense of community back and providing job opportunities. This will be achieved by opening some significant routes from the streets outside the site as well as introducing back the traditional spirit of the collective living in Sandeli by a new housing development. Job opportunities will be created by the front shop/office building, community centre and childcare centre.
An investigation of the architectural relationship between a room and the raw ingredients that make up the space: natural daylight, artificial lighting, materials, structure. A design of a room with a specific atmosphere. A group of three students created which overall dimensions were 9m x 9m x 9m at 1:20 scale.
“Solid upon Frame”
Timber frame holding a solidity of concrete roof with a sky light entering the space, being a focus of the attention.
A short project, in groups of three students, which purpose is to discover
the salient characteristics of a particular aspect of a particular building precedent. The aim is
- explore the possibilties of orthographic representation techniques as a way of analysing and comunicating architectural ideas;
- allow the opportunity for close study and discourse centered on a specific example of architectural practice.
Where should people meet?
The design presents a non-religious, human-centred place for everyone who would like to feel as a part of a strong community. Within that, people who could feel slightly overwhelmed by larger groups would enjoy their own company in a quieter, reflective space; and those, for whom the world is overwhelming in general, a more professional advice would be offered.
Bench Detail 1:20
A developed detail of the building is situated on an upper floor of the reflective space. An oak bench is designed to be a part of an oak floor panels. This detail intends to emerge from the floor and is constructed from the same material as the floor. It is supported by the concrete wall.
